Onlive is a game streaming service. Basically, if you have a good internet connection and an average (non-gaming)PC you can stream modern 3d games with no lag*. I was curious so I gave it a try.
You can download the program on onlive's site for free and play trail games for free. SO you have nothing to lose to try it out. It was really cool to see my laptop play games I know it would have trouble playing like dirt 2 and boarderlands. I was playing on the wifi beta mode and did experience slowdowns (because of my internet connection) at times. It is still a very cool service and maybe the future of PC gaming. |

Dave Perry (of Shiny/Earthworm Jim/MDK fame) is onto something with Onlive. I plan on checking it out but my connection is only 1 meg a second (it slows down trying to stream Youtube). _________________ |

I forgot to add. Each game requires zero install. No worrying about compatibility / driver issues either.
The internet slowdowns I experienced were very minor. A window would popup saying, "your connection speed has slowed down". Then in 5 seconds later you press "ok" and it would put you right back where you were.
I really like the service they just need more games. If all of steam's library was on onlive I would totally love onlive. |

The whole idea sounds like HD-DVD for video games. But then, you never know what will or wont take on. |

Onlive is closer to Netflix for games (not like Gamefly either, but where you get the game immediately). _________________ |

Cool idea for people that have the bandwidth, needs a bigger library though. |

Have you tried Gaikai or whatever Dave Perry is calling it? I mistakenly thought DP was with Onlive, he is not. _________________ |

I really want to try out the set top box. I'll give the trial a shot though and see what I think about it. _________________ www.mondocoolcast.com

I tried it out ... the games look alright. But the input lag really gets in the way for any real kind of gaming. I know my connection is more than fast enough to handle it, and when I tried Borderlands there was just too much in the way of latency which is more than enough to get in the way of seriously playing it.
And it kept giving me connection issues, which is another irritation.
It's definitely a neat idea, but that's all it is. While it was cool to see that game in full detail rather than the lowest possible settings like I have to run it on, I'd rather play the game without that irritating lag and being kicked off just because their servers take a vegemite.
Reminds me of Ubisoft DRM, just without having to install the game. _________________ http://www.wastedseconds.com
