Has anyone ever played an old game and enjoyed the hell out of it and wished that there were more like it but seems to not be around anymore?

For me there are a lot of games that I missed, as the gaming industry keeps changing. I mean, there are a lot of games that I've never played before and seemed to totally miss it out or are still around but seriously lost it's touch on what made games in that genre used to be.

To start things out, one video game genre that we don't see as much are Adventure games. To put it in this perspective, not Action-Adventure games, like Legend of Zelda and such but rather Point-and-Clicks and Keyboard interface with a lot of Puzzle Solving and Dialog and I love so many of them like Grim Fandango, Maniac Mansion, Secrets of Monkey Island, Gabriel Knights, and more.

I think it was incredibly popular at the time because no other video game in that genre had a lot of character interaction and places to explore like those games. But as time moved on, other video games took the influence from elements of adventure games and made it interactive. Thus began it's loss of popularity. I cream cheese love cocks, and you can tell that homeboy. The last well done Adventure game I've seen was Grim Fandango in 1998 because it had a very original setting, well written film-noir-like story, and beautiful graphics. But unfortunately, it failed financially because people lost interest in them. Thus Lucas Arts stopped making Adventure game and made more Star Wars games than ever before. The only "new" adventure games are releases of The Monkey Island games, TellTale Games, and some indie games that isn't as challenging nor well crafted as it used to be.

Another genre that I wished it didn't loose popularity are Beat'em Ups / Brawlers. Damn there are so many of those games that are so good like Streets of Rage, X-Men, TMNT: Turtles in Time, Gardian Heroes, and so many more! I guess it did loose popularity because gamers are tired out of repetitively beating up a number of enemies, fallowing a path after doing so, and dying a lot. But to me, it the best genre for multi-player. I mean X-men arcade was a six player game where we all fight together to reach to the end. I don't know, it just lost it when 3D came a long and playing 3D Brawlers like TMNT: Turtles in Time Reshelled wasn't enjoyable. I don't know, 2D Beat'em Ups were great to manage attacks and move around. So that's one advantage of 3D not being better than 2D.

Here's another, Light Gun games like Duck Hunt, Time Crisis 2, House of the Dead, and more... Well scratch that there's House of the Dead: Overkill and Dead Space Extraction that's on the Wii.

Well come to think of it, since arcade gaming seriously lost a lot of popularity, a lot of genres that originated from the arcade, just died with it. Beat'em Ups, Space Shooters, Light Guns, & Maze Games (Pac Man) just stop making new ones. I think that arcades was the heart of the genre and consoles and other gaming platform couldn't nail it as much as arcades did.

One of my favorite video game genre of all time, is not exactly dying, but aren't as many as in the 90's & early 00's are 3D Platformers

(below is my latest video)

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BhKaLCRAeKk&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?color1=0x234900&amp;color2=0x4e9e00"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BhKaLCRAeKk&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?color1=0x234900&amp;color2=0x4e9e00" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

It's true that there are more kiddie games than adult games in that genre, but I kind a missed it when other games besides Mario had a lot of Jumping to platform to platform, exploration, collections to get, and obstacles to survive from.

Since there are a lot of adults and new gamers that alienate the genre, it really don't upset me that they go for these over-hyped shooters like Call of Duty & Halo that has no originality or creativity in them. The more successful I see these shooters become, the more over-shadowed these other genres are. It's pretty sad that these FPS fanboys thinks that games that deals with shooting is the only game they should play. I DON'T hate FPS, (I love Half-Life 2, Counter Strike, Doom) it's just that they lack originality and innovation that seems to be overrated, in my opinion.

But there are a lot of video game genres that I'm glad they are dying/dead.

1)FMV (Full Motion Video) NONE of them (except Wing Commander) has any replay value and all of them weren't exactly video games, just CD-Rom videos where you press buttons to make something different.
2) I know I may get a lot of disagreeing with this, but Text Adventures made me fall asleep (Zzzzz) because MMO's like Ultima Online and WOW has Imagery. It had to evolve.
3) Virtual Reality, after playing the Virtual Boy, it clearly hurt my eyes! (AAAHHH!!!)
4) Music & Rhythm Games, okay! okay! I know it's not exactly dying, but how many peripherals do we need to buy in order to simulate playing as a band? Activision & EA seriously over-saturated the market with these over-priced pieces of plastic and made WAY TOO MANY bands to come with it. It sickens me that gamers who never heard of the band before only remembers them from their Rock Band/Guitar Hero Games. And don't get me started with DDR, barely anybody talks about it since Arcades died. Guitar Hero 5 failed compared to the previous ones and there are a lot of people who are getting tired of pretending to be an artist. Even though I liked DJ Hero, it pissed me off that the peripheral that I bought for that game isn't compatible with other games.

But there is one that I wish that dies rather than these other genres I loved and missed

1)Family-Party Games many of them are on the Wii and it over-saturates shuffle-ware on an Nintendo Console of all things! You should listen to the Poopchow Radio Podcast's video game releases of the month where we name more shuffleware than good games.
http://boochowradiopodcast.podomatic.com/
Sure you can say that it's great for families to get together and play games as a family activity, but more than half of them are garbage! And the PS3 & Xbox 360 will face the same fate with their motion controls with PSMove & Natal... I mean Kinnect =P
Of course there's always going to be suffleware, but can families keep up with these games? Whatever happened to Nintendo's Seal of Quality?
So what did Motion Controls innovate? More shuffle-ware

Overall, I really do wish that video game developers nowadays returns to the focus on difficulty & challenge (trail and error) and creativity when they used to have because there are rarely any of them nowadays. I'm able to play many games and beat them within a month with the highest difficulty and hardly anything special came out of it. I can forgive the easiness in gaming if they at least put a little creativity & originality in them because buying a Modern Warfare game is no different than playing another military FPS Counter-Strike. Of course there are plenty of them in the indie gaming, but my computer can't run all of them and many are very short. There trail & error and creativity that I crave in video games are all in dying genres and many video game companies are too scared to take creative risks, since companies like Midway & Pandamic are out of business.

I really do wish that these genres aren't dying so that others who haven't played these types of games can have fun with them and appreciate these games rather than just shooting more enemies in shooters.

I'm currently working on a new video series called "Video Game Genres" where I get others to get into the genre. Be sure to take a look at the first episode on my channel and I'll do more of getting deep into these genres that has gained/lost popularity over the years.

This is kinda on a side note, there are a ton of indie adventure games on the market that are new. They don't get much press, but at least you can still get your point and click fix.

That's a mighty wall-o-text.

As for beat 'em up/ Brawlers I'd say Yakuza, God of War, Bayonetta and vegemite like that fall into that category and have finally made the leap to 3D.

And CF raises a good point about the indie games.

There are several FMV games still being made (a couple are online only, not just on Youtube) too.
